Cervical Screening (Smear Tests)

If you have received your CervicalCheck letter, please contact reception to book your free smear test.

Cervical screening helps prevent cervical cancer by identifying abnormal cells in the cervix. It is not a test for cancer, but a way to check cervical health. CervicalCheck provides free screening to women aged 25 to 65.

A smear test is quick, simple, and usually takes only a few minutes. Most results are normal. Around 1 in 20 women may have cell changes that need follow‑up. In Ireland, approximately 200 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, making it one of the most common female cancers in Europe.

Breast Check

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Ireland, with about 2,700 diagnoses each year. Most cases occur in women over 50, but younger women—and rarely, men—can also be affected.

BreastCheck is a Government‑funded screening programme offering free mammograms to women aged 50 to 69 every two years. Screening aims to detect breast cancer early, when treatment is most effective.

All women should regularly check their breasts for lumps or changes. Dr Ciara Kelly’s breast self‑examination video is a helpful guide on what to look for.

Menopause

Menopause occurs when periods stop and pregnancy is no longer possible. It usually happens between ages 45 and 55 as oestrogen levels fall, with the average age being 51. Around 1 in 100 women experience menopause before age 40 (premature ovarian insufficiency).

Common Symptoms

Many women experience symptoms that can affect daily life, including:

  • Hot flushes

  • Night sweats

  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort during sex

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Low mood or anxiety

  • Reduced libido

  • Problems with memory or concentration

Symptoms can begin months or years before periods stop and may continue for several years afterwards. Some women also develop urinary incontinence after menopause, which can be treated.

When to Contact Your GP

Speak with your GP if:

  • Your symptoms are affecting your quality of life

  • You experience symptoms before age 45

Your GP can usually confirm menopause based on symptoms. If you are under 45, a blood test may be needed.

Treatment Options

Your GP may recommend treatments or lifestyle changes, such as:

  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – tablets, patches, gels, or implants

  • Vaginal oestrogen, lubricants, or moisturisers

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for low mood or anxiety

  • Healthy lifestyle changes, including regular exercise and balanced nutrition

If symptoms do not improve or HRT is not suitable, your GP may refer you to a menopause specialist.

Menopause Video Resources

The ICGP provides a series of short videos explaining menopause, diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment options. These resources were developed by Dr Nóirín O’Herlihy and Dr Ciara McCarthy.
