Asthma

Asthma is a common condition that causes coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and breathlessness. It affects 1 in 10 people in Ireland, and with the right treatment most people can live full, active lives. Asthma is also included in the Chronic Disease Management Programme.

Symptoms of Asthma

Asthma symptoms vary from person to person and may come and go. Common symptoms include:

  • Coughing

  • Wheezing

  • Shortness of breath

  • Chest tightness

Episodes may be triggered by colds, chest infections, exercise, temperature changes, dust, irritants, or allergies such as pollen or animals. Night‑time symptoms are common and may wake you from sleep.

Not everyone experiences all symptoms — some people have occasional episodes, while others may have symptoms more frequently.

Treatment of Asthma

Asthma treatment is personalised. Your GP or asthma nurse will work with you to create a plan that combines medication and self‑management strategies. The goal is simple: you control your asthma, rather than asthma controlling you.

Working closely with your GP helps ensure you are on the most effective treatment for your symptoms.

Living With Asthma

Everyone with asthma should have a Personal Asthma Action Plan. This plan outlines:

  • Your asthma medicines

  • Signs your asthma is getting worse

  • What to do during worsening symptoms

  • Emergency steps for an asthma attack

Your plan allows you to adjust your medication within agreed limits to stay in control. Make sure you have an asthma review at least once a year, or sooner if symptoms worsen.

A key part of asthma management is taking your preventer inhaler regularly, even when you feel well. Preventer medication builds long‑term protection for your airways.
