Mental Health
We provide an empathetic, confidential service for anyone experiencing stress, anxiety, low mood, or depression. Our GPs are experienced in diagnosing and treating mental health difficulties using both pharmacological and non‑pharmacological approaches. If you are struggling, please make an appointment with your GP to discuss your options.
Mental health is about more than the absence of illness — it includes having a positive sense of wellbeing, enjoying daily life, believing in your abilities, coping with stress, and maintaining healthy relationships. As your document notes:
“Positive mental health allows us to enjoy life’s pleasures… cope with the normal stresses of life, work/study productively and enjoy socialising.”
When negative emotions become overwhelming or long‑lasting, they can interfere with daily life. Talking about how you feel can be an important first step. You might speak with a friend, family member, counsellor, or your GP.
Need Help Now?
If you need immediate support, you can contact your GP or reach out to one of the confidential helplines listed below. Your document emphasises:
“If you need to talk to someone now here are a number of helplines you can contact for confidential non‑judgemental support.”
A short video is also available with suggestions on how to talk to your GP about your mental health.
Five Ways to Wellbeing
Mental Health Ireland promotes five simple actions that support wellbeing:
Connect
Spend time with family, friends, neighbours, and colleagues. Nurturing relationships helps build happiness, security, and purpose.
Be Active
Find ways to move every day — walking, running, gardening, dancing, or any activity you enjoy. Physical activity has been shown to improve mental health.
Take Notice
Pay attention to the present moment. Notice nature, changing seasons, or small daily pleasures. Being mindful of your thoughts and feelings can help you feel more grounded.
Keep Learning
Try something new or revisit an old interest. Learning boosts confidence and supports wellbeing.
Give
Acts of kindness — thanking someone, helping a neighbour, volunteering — can increase happiness and strengthen community connections.
Volunteering can be a great way to meet people and feel more connected. Volunteer Ireland can help you find opportunities that suit your interests. You can find your local volunteering centre through their website.
